The Soccer - with No Limits
Dear All !!! The 2nd edition of the Gulf Bank – KEA Friendship Cup Football Tournament came to a conclusion on the 8 April 2011 with the losers’ final match between KEA and NSS followed by the much awaited final match played between TEC & MACE at the Saheel Sports Club. In the losers finals KEA edged NSS 2-1 to win the 2nd Runner Up trophy. The match was played in high spirit with both the teams playing some fearsome attaching football. Kea took the lead in the 1st half through a clinical finish from Immanuel followed by a thunderous strike from a distance by Danny to make the score of 2-0 which was quiet a healthy lead at that point. NSS came back strong in the second half with some good football. Their game plan paved off when a long and high ball was taken on the volley and converted to a goal by the adjourned Man of the Match Naseem. KEA held on the 2-1 marginal lead for rest of the period to win the trophy. The final was played between TEC and MACE two best teams of the tournament. After the introduction of players and referee by the MACE and TEC Chairman’s, TEC kicked off proceedings, with most in the crowd expecting a easy win for TEC given the fact that they were better team on papers. Team MACE was a mix of experienced players with some emerging young talents. To everyone’s surprise TEC was given a run for their money by the young stalwarts of MACE who fought shoulder to shoulder with the highly rated TEC players. To no surprise TEC took the lead in the 1st half with some swift through passes from the midfield to Suresh who wasted no opportunity to score his 5th goal of the tournament. The self belief in the team resulted in MACE scoring the 1st goal courtesy of a mistake by the TEC goal keeper Santhosh and the score was level at 1-1 at halftime. The goal lit the spirit of TEC to come back strong; TEC took control the game with some exception combination of play between the mid fielders and their forwards. Meantime MACE also created few half chances which were dealt firmly by the TEC defense and the goal keeper. When everyone thought the game was heading towards extra time the high spirited TEC came up with their 2nd goal 5 minutes away from the normal time courtesy of some individual game from Ramesh who took shot outside the penalty box resulting in a goal which helped TEC to take the lead 2-1 and maintained their lead till the final whistle to win the Championship. Later Ramesh was adjourned the Man of the Match. Congrats to both teams for bringing such a wonderful end to what has been a highly successful tournament and also to the teams who played the losers finals. Special thanks to all the players from all the participating teams for showing the quality and passion towards the game. Ramesh KP from TEC was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performance in the tournament. Suresh from TEC was awarded the Top Goal Scorer award for scoring 5 goals in the tournament. Aju Issac from MACE was awarded the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, who unfortunately had to miss the finals. Karun Denny of MACE was awarded the Young Promising Player of the Tournament for his contribution towards the team and helping them to bag the runner-up trophy. KEA @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ The Inaugural KEA Throwball Tournament for Ladies was held on 1st April 2011 at the indoor courts of the American International School. Proceedings started at 08:00 AM with the group stages, the 8 teams having been split into 2 groups. Group A comprised of hosts KEA, AECK, TKMCE & TEC whereas MACE, CETAA, NSSCE & NIT fought it out in Group B. The Group stage matches were interspersed with a lively Inaugural Ceremony by the KEA Kids who performed to the tune of the ever-popular Waka-Waka followed by a special performance on the Saxophone by the student band of Kuwait English School, the KES Saxophone Ensemble, who were invited by the KEA Executive Committee exclusively for the event. Being KEF’s 1st ever Ladies’ Only event, the KEA Ladies’ Club President, Mrs. Sherin Thomas welcomed all the KEF teams and members to the event. The KEA President, Mr. Santosh Abraham thanked all the Alumni’s of KEF in participating in this Inaugural venture from KEA and declared the tournament open. KEF General Convenor, Mr. Shankaran Nair & his wife graced the occasion with their presence and praised the efforts taken by the KEA Executive Committee and members for the initiative shown in organizing in such an event. The First Lady of KEA, Dr. Suja Mathew, then handed over the tournament ball to the KEA Captain, Dhanya Nair, which officially set the ball rolling. Formalities completed, focus once again shifted to the courts where the remainder of the group matches continued as the teamsengaged in fierce battles in their quest for glory. Swapping house-work or full-time jobs for sports gear and an-all day workout on the indoor courts may not seem like the easiest task, but full credit to the KEF Ladies who were wonderfully at ease displaying endless amounts of skill and stamina while the husbands took on the role of baby-sitting and cheering from the sidelines for a change. The children fromdifferent age groups were also kept busy through the various games organized on the day to ensure that they were not left behind in the fun factor. At the end of the group matches, KEA and MACE, by virtue of their all-round skills, emerged as strong title favorites topping their respective groups. AECK & CETAA were the runners-up from Group A& B respectively. A special mention must be made on all competing teams, who fought hard and fair which could be seen in the score-lines as the majority of the group matches went the full distance of 3 sets. Lunch ensued to give the 4 semi-final teams a much needed break, to recharge themselves as well as re-think strategies for the crucial knockout matches that were to follow. More excitement was to follow as KEA Ladies, who until then were a class apart, suddenly found the going rough against opponents CETAA falling behind by a considerable margin in the 1st set to find themselves down set point. However, they regrouped at just the right time and went on to win the first set 17-15. A similar pattern followed early in the 2nd set before KEA broke the resistance of the CETAA Ladies winning 15-12. MACE, in the 2nd semifinal, proved too hot for AECK winning 15-7 & 15-13 sending a strong message to the KEA contingent for the final. A short break was followed by the Loser’s final between CETAA & AECK. Both teams, belying the agony of their semifinal losses, put on a stirring display before CETAA emerged victorious by 2 sets to 1 winning 15-11, 9-15, 15-13. The stage was set of a cracking final, going by the superior form of both teams earlier on. However, as has been the case with most finals everywhere, it turned out to be an anti-climax. Hosts KEA, ran amuck, jumping to huge leads in both sets before easing to a comfortable straight sets win (15-6, 15-11). KEA Ladies, ably led by their captain Dhanya Nair, thus emerged Champions in the Inaugural KEA Throwball tournament for Ladies without dropping a single set. Dhanya Nair, capping off a fine display at the heart of the KEA team, was later declared as the ‘Player of the Tournament’. The prize distribution ceremony was held soon after. Trophies were presented for the third place, runners-up and tournament winners. The players of these teams were also individually honored with medals. Mrs. Annie George (spouse of MACE Chairman, Mr. P. C. George), Mrs. Shanti Nair (spouse of Mr. Sankaran Nair) and Dr. Suja Mathew (spouse of Mr. Santosh Abraham) presented the players’ medals. Mr. Finney George of METEX gave away the trophy for the third place, while Mr. Suresh Pillai of Mark Technologies gave away the runners-up trophy. The winners’ trophy was given away by Mr. Santosh Abraham KEA President. Dhanya Nair, Captain of KEA bagged the player of the tournament award for her brilliant performance. Mr. Sankaran Nair awarded the trophy. KEA Executive Committee wishes to take this opportunity to thank 1. Our Sponsors K-MED, METEX, Mark Technologies, GAT Co and ACME for whole-heartedly supporting this event. 2. The Tournament Organizing Committee. Rinosh spearheaded the committee ably assisted by Jiji, Robin, Venu, Paul T, Jimmy, Sherin Thomas, Jisha Merin and Rajani Suresh. 3. Kiddies Games organizers Sanjay Nair, Sheema George, Sunu Thomas, Indu Venugopal and Kushi Mijo. 4. Official photographers, Presoon and Santhosh Kumar. 5. Chief 6.
